About AventWest Community of Shalom
The Shalom Plan
Churches and communities working together to rebuild and renew community life for the AventWest Communities of Shalom, August 2000.
The Vision
AventWest will be a community of opportunity and freedom for all its citizens. Its citizens will be empowered and accepted to move freely throughout the community, engaging structures and individuals with confidence and without fear.
The Mission
AventWest Community of Shalom works through its churches, schools, social service providers and other community agencies to provide affordable housing, effective transportation, extended medical access, and great spirit celebrations for all its citizens. Programs to carry out these goals will be developed on a continuing basis as specific needs are discerned.
The History
A Shalom Zone collaboration was initiated in Southwest Raleigh beginning in the late Fall of 1998. The work that was begun continues in the AventWest Shalom Zone contributes to peace and understanding among neighbors.
In January of 1999, the United Methodist Church offered to train a team of neighborhood leaders who would then help to initiate a broad vision and strategic comprehensive plan to build Shalom among the neighbors who hail from many cultures from around the world. Out of this training, emerged the AventWest Community of Shalom. About a year later, the AventWest Community Development Corporation was chartered and formed as a 501(3) organization.
