Program Sites
The AventWest Children's Mentoring program meets at two sites in the AventWest community two afternoons each week to provide tutoring for academically at risk students residing in the AventWest community.
Tutoring began at Avent Ferry United Methodist Church in February 1999 one day a week, and Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church began serving students later that year. The number of students has increased from 24 students in 1999 to 65 students.

The younger students at this site enjoy spending time on the playground where they play on the jungle gym, swings and other equipment. After enjoying a healthy snack, students work with volunteer tutors on basic skills in the areas of reading, writing and math skills that adhere to the NC Standard Course of Study. Academic materials including flash cards, reading and math materials and individual notebooks are provided to help meet the needs of each student.

Daily Routine
The students in grades 5-8 enjoy arriving as early as possible to spend time outside where they enjoy soccer and other activities. The church site provides a safe place for the students to play games and socialize with their peers.
The students participate in the Be Active NC program sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of N.C. This program is a component of the Kids Cafe activities with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern N.C. The students wear pedometers and participate in physical activities from the Be Active NC curriculum.
After the physical activity period, the students work on homework and basic skills with volunteer tutors. The students at the Avent Ferry UMC site have homework to complete and can work on reports or research in the computer lab. English is a second language for the majority of the students so the tutors assist in understanding directions, give guidance on math problems, read with the students, help with writing assignments or the completion of special projects.
While the students work with the tutors, volunteers prepare a dinner meal with food from the Food Bank and from frozen entrees prepared and delivered by the Interfaith Food Shuttle each week.
